PDF Books from Wikipedia

Wikipedia is just brilliant.

One of the great features of this site, I liked was, the ability of combine a few pages of our interest and convert it to a PDF file. This can be used for either

• later reading
• sending to customer.

This blog post is showing how to create a PDF of some of our like minded pages. Let us say we need to create a PDF of some information on Storage Area Networking, Fibre Channel and SCSI.

Step 1.

1. Goto the page of Storage Are Networking

2. Choose Create a Book

3. Start Book Creator

5. Goto the next page on Fibre Channel Protocol

6. Add this page also.

7. Goto the SCSI page and add it as well. You should now be able to see 3 pages.

 

8. Click on Show Book, and on the next screen enter the title.

9. On the right click on download

10. There are many formats to choose from. Let us say you choose PDF and Download.

Ultimately, you get a Download link. (Press F5 to refresh)

The book is ready a PDF file.

PDF Splitter

Many a times we need to split PDF files. We don’t have adobe full version to work with.

There are two ways we can do this.

a. Install and PDF printer and then print page by page. This is tedious but still workable.

b. A better solution is to download PDFSam. Please goto this site.

The beauty of this solution is as follows

1. It is free and open source

2. It promises what it does with no hidden catches.

So next time you want to split (or merge PDF’s) do use this. You may want to get some pages from a manual and send to a customer. You may want to split a huge book into chapters so that they consume less RAM while opening or less space on mobile devices.

E-Books Converter

Many of us like to collect e-books. Most of them are in PDF format. But if you are the person who like to read the e-books on other devices like, iphone, android phones, tablets, nokia phones etc, then you might want to convert the books to a format that is friendly with the form factor (screen dimensions) of the device.

There is one excellent software, I recommend highly, called calibre.

So what to do now?

a. download the software from here.

b. Install and run it.

c. Select a PDF. Convert it to epub format. Use iTunes, and bring the epub to iphone, and read it there.

A good place to start is with the hundreds of manuals in PDF format that we read everyday.
